ANC recently introduced a new product for baby calves. Many of you have used Calf Power, but the new product contains spray dried eggs! These are special eggs as they are from chickens vaccinated or immunized against various strains of bacteria and viruses. At this time much work has been done with pigs, and recently calves, and someday, possibly humans.
According to Mark Cook, a poultry scientist from University of Wisconsin, egg yolk antibodies, when fed, work by changing the environment in the animal's gut.
A recent article in Feedstuffs reports. "The feeding of antibiotics can reduce immune stimulus by knocking out gut bacteria. The chicken yolk provides an inexpensive source of antibodies. Some studies show that a low level feeding of antibiotics to livestock can produce drug resistant bacteria, by feeding antibodies instead of bacteria, producers can avoid this problem."
"Passive immune protection can be obtained following oral administration of eggs or purified yolk immunoglobulins", says researcher Dr. M.H.V. Van Regenmortel (France). Another way of transferring antibodies is directly from blood in the form of feeding plasma. There will soon be several poultry operations in Wisconsin producing eggs from chickens that are hyperimmunized, which means they are exposed to a series of shots to boost antibody production to excessive degrees.
The dried egg product (Protimax) from DuCoa is included in our old Calf Power formula to form Calf Power Plus. One five pound bucket will feed five calves for a month at a cost of about 23 cents per calf per day. The calf also gets a high level of Lactobacillus acidophilusbacteria, Vitamins A, D, E, and B-Vitamins. Calf Power Plus can be obtained from your ANC dealer or consultant!
