![]() by Rob Bailey President Agri-Nutrition Consulting's approach to DFM's is a little different than the competitions. Most DFM's you come in contact with are sold as stand-alone products that are promoted to solve almost every problem you can imagine and have claims to work better than anything else available! There is also a tendency to spend a lot of dollars advertising in trade magazines and fancy literature. This is not all bad, because how else are you going to get the information? Look at the soft drink industry; probably well over one half of the cost you spend on the product goes for advertising. This isn't so with milk, as we struggle to give up even a few cents per hundred to pay for advertising. With our Micro NRG products, our advertising budget is less than 0.5% and I would be the first to admit that maybe it should be higher, but here's a few reasons why you won't see the flashy ad's in your favorite magazine: 1) ANC is a nutritional and management consulting company made up of independent consultants. These consultants are selling you a complete program to help your herd stay healthy and be the most profitable. We sell sound advise, research, and ingredients that work when a ration is balanced properly. Over 98% of our Micro NRG product is sold to customers on this complete program. Is the competition concerned about your entire nutrition program or just their product? 2) Our independent consultants want the best possible products for the best price and any advertising is actually the customers to pay for, isn't it? To some degree, if advertising increases sales and ANC can then take a lower margin because of it, the customer could benefit. This has worked well in the world of electronics, but does the price of soft drinks go down because they sell more? Should our dairy program customers have to pay a higher price because we want to market a product to everyone who might buy it? In kid language, not! Because we market a program and not "magic bullets" (as if there really are any) the ANC consultants that you work with are much more aware of your needs by being familiar with your operation, cows, feedstuffs, and goals by working with you every month. However, there are many products we use and recommend that we do not sell! Please ask your consultant, or call the office before you decide to use any new products of feed ingredients. This will help you to decide on how and if they fit into your feeding program. We constantly look to improve products based on research and results, but remember, ANC's products are formulated to be "value and service added".
