MICRO NRG PLUS - A Direct-Fed Microbial Product

Key Account Manager, Chr. Hansen

Chr. Hansen is pleased to have ANC as a valued partner. ANC made a decision about a year ago to evaluate microbial suppliers to look for strains of bacteria which would benefit their clients. After extensive stability testing, ANC decided to include Biomate Yeast Plus and SF-20 in their Micro NRG Plus formula. Micro NRG Plus is a combination of bacteria and live cell yeast, which aids in digestion, feed utilization and increased appetite, resulting in more usable energy for milk production and weight gain. Check with your ANC Consultant for specific feeding recommendations.

Direct-fed microbials were originally called probiotics. However, in 1989, FDA required manufacturers to use the DFM term. A DFM needs to be a live source of naturally occurring microorganisms, which must be stated as guaranteed cell count on the label. The best responses from a DFM will occur when used at birth, during weather or diet changes, during periods of stress and after antibiotic therapy.

The stability of DFM’s is critical since the microorganisms must be delivered live to the animal to be effective. Therefore, the manufacturer’s storage and handling recommendations must be followed. The product should be stored in a cool dry place; away from heat, sunlight, moisture and humidity. After opening, the container should be kept tightly closed to protect the DFM from moisture and loss of viability.

What are the right questions to ask when purchasing a DFM product?
1) What bacteria does it contain? - Several different strains are not necessarily better. Much like Holstein cows, genetically they might be similar but they may not produce the same amount of milk.
2) What is the cell count (CFU’s) of this product? Remember this must be indicated on the label.
3) Has the company conducted any research? At a credible University or Research Center.
4) Do they have expertise in microbiology? You’re dealing with a live organism, which is very complex.
5) Offer technical support? If you have questions or a complaint, can you talk to someone who understands these products.
6) What is the shelf life of DFM? Generally bacteria do not live forever; dead bacteria are of little value to your animals.

Remember, the DFM Industry is growing at a rapid pace and has very few regulations. So beware of products that make unrealistic claims. In addition, not all bacteria are the same. I can assure you that Micro NRG Plus is a quality product which you can have confidence in.
