![]() by Dr. Warren Bohnhoff, DVM The proper vaccination program for your dairy herd can improve herd health and maintain good performance. Vaccines prepare an animal's immune system to respond quickly to infection by a specific organism, prevent signs of disease, and reduce the spread of diseases. After you have established a vaccination program, through consultation with your veterinarian, there are a few tips that will help ensure maximum benefits from the program. Always be sure to read the label for safety information, storage recommendations, withdrawal times, route of administration, the purpose of the vaccine or drug and instructions for proper preparation. Also, remember that pathogenic organisms may be present, but visible symptoms may not always be seen. Good balanced nutrition, such as that provided by ANC, and the best possible management will help minimize serious problems. The following is a chart on vaccinations for dairy herds. Some of the vaccinations are optional while others are generally recommended, depending on your geographic location and risk of disease. Consult your herd veterinarian for more specific information.
Remember that vaccines do not treat or cure existing disease and cannot compensate for poor ventilation or unsanitary conditions. Return To Table Of Contents |
