Rations are only as good as the forage samples taken and samples submitted for testing are only as good as the procedures used to obtain them. Keep in mind, that one sample submitted for analysis is many times a representation of many tons of feed. Samples should be taken especially when changes in milk production or manure consistency are seen. Also watch for moisture changes or changes in forage quality. Even if change is not noticed, it is a good idea to take a sample every other month. When taking samples from silage bags, take at least 10 handfuls off the face and mix in a pail. If you have bunkers, observe if there are distinct layers of feed on the face. If there are layers, take a number of samples across each layer and mix in a pail. Otherwise take a number of samples from the face and mix thoroughly in a pail. With top unloading silos allow the unloader to go all the way around then take a number of samples. With a bottom unloading silo, let the unloader run for awhile and than take a number of samples and mix.
